Also, there is a rising problem threatening the health of older adults which is fall. According to the statistics from Elderly Health Centre in 2017, among 45,000 aged 65 or above community-dwelling older adults, 10.1% had experienced falls at least once within 6 months. Among those who had fallen, 10.2% had fractures. Fortunately, the above problems can be prevented or the risk of them can be decreased by doing strength training and stretching exercises.
First of all, strength training can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by decreasing blood pressure, decreasing LDL cholesterol, and reducing body fat. Also, osteoporosis can be hindered by doing strength training because maintaining a strong and functional musculoskeletal system can improve bone density. Moreover, strength training can decrease the risk of Type 2 Diabetes by improving insulin response and improving glucose utilization in older adults.
Additionally, not only the strength training is beneficial to older adults but also stretching exercise does. Regular stretching exercises can improve the flexibility of older adults so that the balance of the older adults can be enhanced. As a result, the chance of older adults falling will be lowered.
